Queridos Amigos,

El equipo de SIREN ha comenzado el año nuevo con nuestro compromiso y dedicación renovados a las comunidades a las que servimos. En este momento en que el presidente está presionando obsesivamente por un muro inútil, más que nunca, ¡debemos levantarnos y luchar por políticas respetuosas, humanas y que mantengan a las familias unidas! SIREN continuará luchando ferozmente por los inmigrantes y refugiados a través de nuestro trabajo en el empoderamiento de nuestros jóvenes y comunidades, los servicios legales, la defensa de políticas y el compromiso cívico.

A medida que comenzamos un nuevo capítulo emocionante, aquí hay un breve resumen de algunos de nuestros logros más orgullosos del 2018:

• Expansión de SIREN y apertura de nuestra oficina en el Valle Central para servir a las comunidades más necesitadas.

• Ofrecimos asistencia legal directa y representación a más de 5,000 personas.

• Más de 15,000 textos por medio de nuestra red SIREN para informar y educar sobre temas importantes.

• Dirigimos la capacitación y apoyamos a cientos de líderes juveniles, incluyendo 90 participantes del Instituto de Verano para la Liberación Juvenil.

• Más de 15,000 jóvenes y nuevos ciudadanos estadounidenses fueron registrados para votar.

• Más de 130,000 llamadas telefónicas para informar y activar a los votantes de baja propensión en el norte de California y Valle Central.

The SIREN team has begun the New Year with a renewed commitment and dedication to the many communities that we serve. At a time when the present administration is obsessively pushing for a useless wall, more than ever, we must rise up and fight for policies that are respectful, humane, and keep families together! SIREN will continue to fight fiercely for immigrants and refugees through our legal services, policy advocacy, civic engagement and through our community organizing with our multiracial and intergenerational leaders at the forefront.

As we begin an exciting new chapter, here is a brief recap of some of our proudest accomplishments in 2018:

• SIREN expanded and opened an office in the Central Valley Office to serve communities in most need.

• Expanded our legal team that continues to successfully fight for our clients.

• Mobilized countless of directly impacted community members to take action and advocate for a Clean Dream Act, Abolish ICE, Public Charge, Defund Hate and more.

• Over 1,000 new Spanish, Farsi and Vietnamese speaking volunteers recruited, trained, and mobilized to support our work.

• Provided direct legal assistance and representation to over 5,000 individuals.

• Over 15,000 texts sent to our SIREN network to inform and educate on important issues.

• Led trainings to support hundreds of youth leaders, including 90 Youth Liberation Summer Institute participants.

• Over 15,000 youth and new American citizens registered to vote.

• Over 130,000 phone contacts made to inform and activate low propensity voters in Northern California and the Central Valley.

LANZAMIENTO DE CLÍNICAS DE DEFENSA DE DEPORTACIÓN EN EL VALLE CENTRAL

En 2018, celebramos la apertura de nuestra oficina del Valle Central y la comunidad nos acogió con entusiasmo. Hoy, estamos orgullosos de anunciar el lanzamiento de nuestras Clínicas de Defensa de Deportación, que brindarán asesoría legal gratuita a personas necesitadas en todo el Valle Central todos los martes de 9:00am a 4:00pm y talleres, Conozca sus Derechos, cada martes a las 10:00am.

“SIREN se complace en ser el primero en brindar este tipo de servicio en el Valle Central. Nuestra comunidad ha estado desatendida durante demasiado tiempo. Es a través de nuestro sistema legal que podemos tener un impacto profundo en la vida de muchas personas y tenemos un equipo legal fenomenal que está liderando el camino," dijo Maricela Gutiérrez, Directora Ejecutiva de SIREN.

“Es extremadamente importante que las personas entiendan sus derechos y que obtengan asesoría legal de expertos legales calificados. SIREN está aquí para responder a sus preguntas y brindar orientación a cualquier persona que lo necesite," dijo el abogado Jesús Martínez.

LAUNCH OF FREE REMOVAL DEFENSE CLINICS IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY

In 2018, we celebrated the opening of our Central Valley office and were warmly embraced by the community. Today, we are proud to announce the launch of our Removal Defense Clinics, which will provide free legal counsel to people in need throughout the Central Valley the clinics will take place every Tuesday from 9:00am to 4:00pm and and Know Your Rights workshops every Tuesday at 10:00am.

“SIREN is excited to be the first to provide these types of services in the Central Valley. Our community has been underserved for far too long. It is through our legal system and community lawyering that we can make a profound impact on people’s lives and we have an phenomenal legal team that is leading the way,” said Maricela Gutiérrez, SIREN’s Executive Director.

In addition to the weekly Removal Defense Clinics, SIREN will continue to offer our Free monthly Asylum Legal Clinics on the fourth Saturday of the month from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

“It is tremendously important that people understand their rights and that they obtain legal advice from qualified legal experts. SIREN is here to answer questions and provide guidance to anyone in need,” said Staff Attorney Jesus Martínez.

DEMOS LA BIENVENIDA A CINDY HER 

Únase a nosotros para dar la bienvenida a nuestra nueva colega en el Valle Central, Cindy Her. Nació y se crió en Fresno, es la menor de 8 hermanos y la tercera en ir a la universidad en su familia. Actualmente es estudiante de segundo año en la Universidad Estatal de Fresno con especialización en desarrollo infantil y minoría en Hmong. Su objetivo es convertirse en maestra y defensora de la comunidad Hmong.

“Trabajar con SIREN me ha ayudado a comprender lo poco que sabe la comunidad sobre sus derechos constitucionales. Al crecer en una comunidad donde somos una minoría, quiero ayudar a mi comunidad con todo lo que pueda a través de SIREN. Estoy extremadamente emocionada y honrada de ser parte del equipo de SIREN," dijo Cindy.

WELCOME TO FELLOW CINDY HER  

Join us in welcoming our new Fellow for the Central Valley, Cindy Her. She was born and raised in Fresno, is the youngest of 8, and the third to go to college in her family. She is currently a sophomore at Fresno State University majoring in child development and minoring in Hmong. Her goal is to become a teacher and an advocate for the Hmong community.

“Working with SIREN has helped open my eyes to so much about how little the community knows about their constitutional rights. Growing up in a community where we are the minority, I want to help my community with all that I can through SIREN. I am extremely excited and honored to be a part of the SIREN team!,” said Cindy.

Terminamos el 2018 con un nivel alto de participación de votantes en una elección en nuestra región y estado. Esto fue posible gracias a nuestros extraordinarios voluntarios que ayudaron a registrar a 15,000 nuevos votantes inmigrantes y jóvenes y que hicieron más de 130,000 llamadas telefónicas el noviembre pasado.

En el 2019, ya nos hemos subido las mangas y estamos en marcha. Hemos visto el cierre de gobierno más prolongado en la historia de los Estados Unidos por un muro fronterizo cruel e innecesario.

Vimos a nuestro nuevo gobernador en California proponer más de $260 millones en fondos para la expansión de Medi-Cal para jóvenes indocumentados en nuestro estado. Sin embargo, tenemos que seguir luchando para asegurarnos de que TODOS los californianos indocumentados estén cubiertos.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT

We ended 2018 with one of the highest voter turnouts in an election in our region and state, thanks to our remarkable volunteers helping to register 15,000 new immigrant and youth voters and making over 130,000 phone calls last November.

Already in 2019, we have rolled up our sleeves and got straight to work. We have seen the longest government shutdown in U.S. history over a cruel and unnecessary border wall.

We saw our new governor in California propose over $260 million in funding for Medi-Cal expansion for undocumented youth in our state, but we need to continue to fight to ensure that ALL undocumented Californians are covered.

And we are preparing and educating our communities on the importance of the 2020 U.S. Census and how to fill out the form when it is available.

There is so much work to be done, and we can’t do it without our SIREN members. That is why this week we are launching our SIREN Membership Drive for 2019! For $25 for the entire year you can:

• Attend our annual membership conference

• Participate in SIREN membership and volunteer trainings

• Vote to endorse policies and ballot propositions in elections

Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN) Condemns Trump’s Threat to Declare National Emergency Trump has manufactured the border crisis and Congress must oppose funding for DHS

Today, Trump is expected to make a potential declaration of a national emergency at the border. In an attempt to circumvent Congress and as a result of the federal government shutdown that he created, Trump is attempting to force the creation of a border wall. By making such an emergency declaration, Trump would be undermining Congress and walking on very questionable legal ground.

The following is a statement from Maricela Gutiérrez, Executive Director of Services, Immigrant Rights, and Education Network (SIREN):

“The only crisis that exists at the border is the unconscionable detention, abuses, and deaths of individuals arriving at the border. Trump and his administration are responsible for the atrocities against asylum-seekers and immigrants coming to this country denying them of basic rights and human dignity. He is also responsible for the current federal government shutdown which he is using as justification for the racist wall and declaration of a national emergency. By separating children from their families and denying legal avenues to apply for asylum, the Trump administration created a humanitarian crisis at the border. Our country should be welcoming those coming to the border - not falsely declaring a national emergency to build a wall.”

Individuals can call their members of Congress and Congressional leadership urging them to oppose any increased funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Building the Power of Immigrants and Youth of Color

Services, Immigrant Rights & Education Network (SIREN) - Bay Area has spent the last several years building the political power of immigrant and youth voters with the aim of shifting the political landscape in the region and across the state. In 2018, we doubled down on our commitment to building this political muscle by registering more than fifteen thousand new immigrant and youth voters, contacting a hundred and sixty thousand already-registered voters, and mobilizing more than two hundred volunteers. In the 2018 midterm elections, our efforts helped generate one of the highest turnouts in state history for a midterm and resulted in the passage of critical local and state ballot measures, as well as the defeat of House members opposed to immigrant rights. 

One of SIREN's youth leaders, Miguel, participated in phone banking and door-to-door canvassing of Spanish-speaking voters. Although Miguel and his family cannot vote because of their immigration status, the day after the election he told us: "The community was my voice at the polls yesterday. Immigrants and youth came out and demonstrated our power in Northern California and the Central Valley. Through our voting power, we are passing policies in our state and region that are impacting our families, and we will carry our momentum into 2019 to fight for immigrant rights and protections for immigrant youth."

While SIREN doesn't engage voters on behalf of specific candidates, we heard the mounting frustration from voters over the lack of action on immigrants' rights. Our volunteers made more than eighty thousand phone calls to voters in House Districts 10 and 21, which are represented by Rep. Jeff Denham (R) and Rep. David Valadao (R), and the number-one issue immigrant voters wanted to talk about was the fact that Congress wasn't doing enough for immigrants. From not passing a clean DREAM Act to not pushing back against President Trump's executive orders restricting immigration, immigrant voters shared their disapproval of the empty promises of their congressional representatives. Not surprisingly, Dunham and Valadao both lost.

As we head into 2019, we have our work cut out for us. In 2018, SIREN opened an office in Fresno and established our immigration legal services, community organizing, policy advocacy, and voter engagement with Central Valley immigrant and youth voters. We know we have the political power and leverage to move Congress on issues like a clean DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform. And through our base-building work, we've built an infrastructure for and secured the trust of the community to lead outreach efforts focused on the 2020 census. It's critical that we overcome the many challenges and barriers to an accurate count and ensure that immigrant communities receive their fair share of funding. 

Beyond the census, we have momentum and the capacity heading into the 2020 elections to have an even greater impact. When we launched our campaign a few years ago, immigrant community leaders dubbed it "Votar Para Ganar" (Vote to Win), because that is our goal. With  2019 approaching, we are gearing up to win even bigger victories for immigrant and refugee communities in the state and to create a more welcoming California for years to come.

APOYANDO LAS VICTIMAS DE VIOLENCIA DOMESTICA// SUPPORTING VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

SIREN está salvando vidas gracias al generoso apoyo de nuestro personal, voluntarios, donantes y amigos.

Susana es una mujer guatemalteca de 25 años que huyó porque fue víctima de abusos graves a manos de su ex pareja. Susana no tenía un sistema de apoyo, ya que quedó huérfana a una edad temprana, y había perdido a su hermano que la cuidaba cuando él tenía solo 17 años. Susana estaba completamente sola, ya que los miembros de la familia que quedaban le dieron la espalda. Eventualmente, su ex pareja, que era su único apoyo, se volvió extremadamente violento y abusivo hacia ella. Una de las peores golpizas que recibió resultó en la pérdida de su bebé que llevaba en su vientre, y ella apenas sobrevivió a sus heridas. Tratando de escapar de su ex pareja, fue a las autoridades guatemaltecas y también se mudó muy lejos. Sin embargo, nada detendría su incesante hostigamiento, ya que siempre la encontraba. Fue entonces cuando decidió que tenía que huir a los Estados Unidos.

Afortunadamente, como resultado de la ayuda del equipo legal de SIREN y de los voluntarios que también brindaron su apoyo, Susana pudo ganar asilo para ella y su hija de 6 años este noviembre pasado. ¡Finalmente esta libre y segura con su hija!

Este es el tipo de trabajo que hacemos para salvar vidas que les pedimos que apoyen hoy con una donación de cualquier tamaño.Mujeres como Susana merecen una segunda oportunidad. ¡Juntos, con su apoyo, podemos transformar vidas!

SIREN is saving lives thanks to the generous support of our staff, volunteers, donors and friends.

Susana is a 25 year old Guatemalan woman who fled her country because she was the victim of severe abuse at the hands of her ex-partner. Susana had no support system, as she was orphaned at a young age, and had lost her brother and caregiver when he was only 17 years of age. Susana was completely alone, as her remaining family members turned their back on her. Eventually, her ex-partner who was her only support became extremely violent and abusive towards her. One of the worst beatings she received resulted in the loss of her unborn child, and her barely surviving her injuries. Trying to escape from her ex-partner, she went to the Guatemalan authorities and also moved far away. However, nothing would stop his incessant harassment no matter where she went. This is when she decided she had to flee to the US.

Thankfully, as a result of the help of the SIREN legal team and volunteers who also lent their support, Susana was able to win asylum for herself and her 6 year old daughter this past November. She is finally free and safe with her daughter!

THE STORY OF A REFUGEE FAMILY // LA HISTORIA DE UNA FAMILIA DE REFUGIADOS

Queridos amigos,

SIREN tiene innumerables historias para compartir de familias que buscan una vida mejor en los Estados Unidos. Esta es la historia de Leila, Farid y Setareh - ciudadanos iraníes que tuvieron que huir de su país porque el gobierno los atrapó asistiendo a una iglesia clandestina. En Irán, es ilegal que un musulmán cambie su religión y la ley de la Sharia exige que las personas que han cambiado su religión sean ejecutadas. Incluso cuando los individuos que cambian de religión no son ejecutados, a menudo se los mantiene en condiciones abominables durante largos periodos de tiempo y son torturados por el estado tanto como una forma de castigo.

Cuando Leila, Farid y Setareh supieron que sus vidas estaban en peligro y estaban siendo  perseguidas por las autoridades iraníes, esta familia no tuvo más remedio que pagarle a un contrabandista para que saliera de Irán a través de Turquía. Desde allí, se dirigieron a Sudáfrica, Brasil y México. La familia planeaba mudarse a Canadá para solicitar asilo, pero fueron detenidos en México bajo sospecha de que sus pasaportes eran falsos.

Leila, Farid y Setareh fueron detenidos durante meses en México en condiciones verdaderamente deplorables mientras esperaban su caso de asilo. Pasaron meses y meses antes de que dos de ellos pudieran llegar a los Estados Unidos. Finalmente, encontraron a SIREN para ayudarlos con su caso de asilo. Hoy dos de la familia han ganado sus casos de asilo. Tan pronto como sea posible, SIREN solicitará al esposo que permanece en México para que también pueda obtener asilo aquí.

Este es un ejemplo de las terribles circunstancias que enfrentan los refugiados cuando huyen de la violencia y la persecución, así como el papel que desempeña SIREN en nuestra comunidad. Los invitamos a unirse a nosotros para salvar vidas a través de un Regalo de Caridad Hoy.

Dear Friends,

SIREN has countless stories to share of families seeking a better life in the United States. This is the story of Leila, Farid, and Setareh - Iranian nationals who had to flee their country because the government caught them attending an underground church there. In Iran, it is illegal for a Muslim to change their religion and Sharia law calls for individuals who are found to have changed their religion to be executed. Even when individuals who change their religion are not executed, they are often held in abhorrent conditions for long periods of time and tortured by the state both as a form of punishment.

When Leila, Farid, and Setareh learned that their lives were in danger and that they were being persecuted by Iranian authorities, this family had no choice, but to pay a smuggler to get them out of Iran through Turkey. From there, they made their way to South Africa, Brazil, and Mexico. The family was planning on moving forward to Canada to apply for asylum but they were stopped in Mexico and detained under suspicion that their passports were fake.

Leila, Farid, and Setareh were detained for months in Mexico in truly deplorable conditions while they waited out their asylum case. Months and months passed before two of them could make their way to the United States. Eventually, they were referred to SIREN to assist them with their asylum case. Today two of them have won their asylum cases; as soon as it is feasible, SIREN will petition for the husband who remains in Mexico so that he can win asylum here as well.

What a year this has been! As we reflect on 2018, we would like to thank you for your amazing support in fighting for the rights of immigrants and refugees in our community. By working together we have created awareness about important issues, pushed forward important public policy like the expansion of local sanctuary policies, and empowered over 130,000 voters. And, very importantly, we have expanded our legal services and support to many immigrants and refugees in need through our new office in the Central Valley.

During this holiday season, we ask for your continued support to help immigrants and refugees. Our clients are fighting for their lives and for their loved ones, under some of the most cruel and unjust immigration policies and practices we have ever witnessed. CARMEN’S STORY

Carmen is a 43 year old Guatemalan woman who fled looking for a safe haven against her abusive husband. Her claim was based on severe physical, verbal and sexual abuse in the course of her 16 years with her husband. Despite the fact that she had filed various police reports with Guatemalan authorities and her husband had been convicted of domestic violence, she was never able to bring him to justice given that he worked in law enforcement. Furthermore, because Guatemalan law allows an abuser to exchange a conviction by paying a nominal fee, her abuser was able to pay his way out. He was back to harming her the very next day. These circumstances led Carmen to flee with her three children.

Her journey to freedom was not easy, but SIREN was there to help every step of the way. SIREN Attorney Grey Torrico prepared the client extensively, and much work went into preparing for this case. Thanks to SIREN, Carmen won her asylum case in November. Carmen and her three children now have a viable way to become permanent residents. They have the ability to apply for that in a year’s time. Their lives have forever changed for the better, thanks to all those who are part of our SIREN community.

TRUTH ACT FORUMS THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA

Over the last several months, the SIREN community came out strong calling for transparency and robust protections for immigrant and refugee communities from counties across the state through TRUTH Act forums. Mandated by the state legislation, counties are required to provide information about their compliance with the law and information sharing with ICE.

• -In Santa Clara County, as the co-convener of the FIRE Coalition, SIREN’s grassroots leaders presented recommendations on how to deepen trust with communities enacting robust ordinances with accountability provisions, supporting all immigrants regardless of any criminal history, and strengthening County database protections.

• -In San Mateo County, SIREN sought answers from the Sheriff to questions about notifying individuals held in custody when ICE requests notifications about their release.

• -In the Central Valley, SIREN worked with partners to convene a People’s Forum as a response to the Truth Act Forum that was held in Fresno. The Board of Supervisors ended the session early, and many community members were not allowed to speak.

KARINA, A STORY OF A SIRENISTA

Karina is a SIREN grassroots leader who has lived in this country for more than 15 years. Like many, her story is that of a hard-working immigrant fighting for her life and safety. Originally from Mexico, she migrated to the US with the goal of surviving an abusive husband. Today, she is the proud mother of two DACA youth, Andrea and Andres, and her youngest, US-born son, Jesus. Karina is a SIRENISTA because of her resiliency, her will to fight for what is right, and her amazing dedication to her community.

Karina’s family is also one of the thousands of immigrant families that will be affected by the proposed public charge rule. Karina’s daughter, Andrea, has been through brain surgery and has a medical condition for which she needs constant medical care. Andrea needs access to Medi-Cal and other health services. As we continue to fight against the public charge rule, let’s remember Karina and her family. We believe every person should have access to health care, just as much as they are worthy of dignity and respect. We honor this SIRENISTA and her family for their courage and determination!

#DEFUNDHATE ALERT 

Trump is asking for more funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to continue terrorizing immigrants and refugees - something we must stop. The country has already witnessed the federal government's atrocities including detentions, deportations, and firing tear gas and rubber bullets at Central American families seeking asylum. Any funding increase would take away money from our schools, health care system and other crucial services in order to separate families and communities. As Congress will soon be deciding on funding for DHS, we would like your help in sending the message that we must defund hate!

Our elected officials need to hear from you that funding DHS' atrocities against immigrant and refugee communities is against our country's values.

¡Ha sido un año increíble! Al reflexionar sobre el 2018, nos gustaría agradecerle su increíble apoyo en la lucha por los derechos de los inmigrantes y refugiados en nuestra comunidad. Al trabajar juntos, hemos creado conciencia sobre temas importantes, hemos impulsado importantes políticas públicas como la expansión de las políticas locales del santuario y hemos dado poder a más de 130,000 votantes. Y, muy importante, hemos ampliado nuestros servicios legales y el apoyo a muchos inmigrantes y refugiados necesitados a través de nuestra nueva oficina en el Valle Central.

LA HISTORIA DE CARMEN

Carmen es una mujer guatemalteca de 43 años que huyó en busca de un refugio contra su esposo abusivo. Su reclamo se basó en graves abusos físicos, verbales y sexuales en el transcurso de sus 16 años con su esposo. A pesar de que ella había presentado varios informes policiales ante las autoridades guatemaltecas y que su esposo había sido condenado por violencia doméstica, nunca pudo llevarlo ante la justicia, dado que trabajó en la aplicación de la ley. Además, debido a que la ley guatemalteca le permite a un abusador intercambiar una condena mediante el pago de una tarifa nominal, su abusador pudo pagar su salida. El día siguiente, volvió a hacerle daño. Estas circunstancias causaron que Carmen huyera con sus tres hijos.

Su viaje a la libertad no fue fácil, pero SIREN estaba allí para ayudar en cada paso del camino. El abogado de SIREN Grey Torrico preparó al cliente extensivamente y se trabajó mucho para preparar este caso. Gracias a SIREN, Carmen ganó su caso de asilo en noviembre. Carmen y sus tres hijos ahora tienen una forma viable de convertirse en residentes permanentes. Tienen la capacidad de solicitar eso en un año. Sus vidas han cambiado para siempre para mejor, gracias a todos aquellos que forman parte de nuestra comunidad SIREN.

FOROS DE LA LEY DE LA VERDAD (TRUTH ACT) EN TODO CALIFORNIA

A lo largo de los últimos meses, la comunidad SIREN hizo un fuerte llamado a la transparencia y protecciones sólidas para las comunidades de inmigrantes y refugiados de los condados de todo el estado a través de los foros de la Ley de VERDAD. Por mandato de la legislación estatal, los condados deben proporcionar información sobre su cumplimiento de la ley y el intercambio de información con ICE.

ALERTA #DEFUNDHATE

Trump solicita más fondos para que el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés) continúe aterrorizando a los inmigrantes y refugiados, algo que debemos detener. El país ya ha sido testigo de las atrocidades del gobierno federal, incluidas las detenciones, las deportaciones y los disparos de gas lacrimógeno y balas de goma a las familias centroamericanas que buscan asilo. Cualquier aumento de fondos le quitaría dinero a nuestras escuelas, al sistema de atención médica y otros servicios cruciales para separar a las familias y las comunidades. Dear Friends,

As we receive the holiday season, there is much to reflect upon and be grateful for. November 6, 2018 was a historic election for the immigrant community and for communities of color. Leading up to the election, politics and policies of racism, hatred, and fear were frighteningly becoming the norm. However, thanks to strong mobilization efforts across the country, members of Congress are more diverse than ever including historic firsts for Black, Muslim, Latinx, and Native American women as well as the LGBTQ community. This is something truly wonderful to celebrate!

With the new makeup of Congress, we are hopeful that there will be a robust check from the legislature against the white supremacist agenda that is being promoted by the White House. We must continue to work together to push members of Congress to protect immigrant communities and communities of color. We will continue to urge them to resist Trump’s hateful policies, pass policies that value the lives of immigrants and refugees, like Health4All at the state level, and continue to fight back against ICE and law enforcement entanglement at local levels across California. And we must continue to organize and mobilize the most affected to lead the way for greater change in 2020!

In the remaining months of 2018, we urge community members to help us fight against proposed regulations on public charge and the detention of immigrant children, families, and community members. We are also ready for the budget battle approaching in December, calling to #DefundICE and #DefundCBP.

As we all celebrate the holidays with our loved ones, we would like to thank you for your partnership! Your support has been vital to the progress we have made as a community thus far. We are so thankful!

SIREN MOBILIZES THOUSANDS TO VOTE

With the relentless attacks on immigrants and refugees by the current administration, never had a midterm election been so important. At SIREN, we truly felt the weight of this responsibility and our team worked around the clock to register voters and turnout youth and new citizens to vote in November. Here are the results of our efforts:
 

-Over 200 Spanish and Vietnamese speaking volunteers recruited, trained, and mobilized.

-Over 5,000 texts sent to our SIREN network.

-Over 15,000 youth and new American citizens registered to vote.

-Over 130,000 phone calls to low propensity voters.

“As we celebrate these accomplishments, we must continue to build upon the gains made across the country to have leadership that is more representative of our country. This is just a start,” said Civic Engagement Director, Jeremy Barousse. “We must treat every election as a critical opportunity to shape the course of our movement. At SIREN, we look forward to continue to work with our dedicated volunteers and grassroots leaders to push forward a pro-immigrant and refugee agenda.”

I AM A SIRENISTA – TIFFANY VUONG

One thing that stood out in the recent election was the amazing impact of young voters and activists across the country. SIREN is privileged to count on the support of many dedicated youth activists like Tiffany Vuong.   

Tiffany first heard about SIREN when she was a student at UC Santa Barbara studying sociology. Upon relocating to the Bay Area, she came to SIREN because of her commitment to social justice. Tiffany has been part of SIREN’s phone banking efforts, informing people about Proposition 10, Proposition 5, and encouraging voters to participate.

“I consider myself an intersectional feminist. That means that there is no single way to liberation. If we are going to be free, we need to make sure things are equal for everyone – no matter their identity, class, gender, color, etc.,” said Tiffany. “No one is free, unless all of us are.”

CENTRAL VALLEY ORGANIZERS DRIVE CHANGE
 

SIREN is proud to have registered over 15,000 new voters across Northern California and the Central Valley! “Through door-knocking, canvassing, texting and many outreach efforts at schools, and  local colleges in rural towns across the Valley, our electoral team was instrumental in building the power of the immigrant and refugee voice in this election,” said Maricela Gutiérrez, SIREN, Executive Director. 
 
In addition to voter registration efforts, SIREN staff and volunteers made over 100,000 phone calls in multiple counties across the Central Valley to inform voters and get out the vote.

One of the most impactful election results in the region was the defeat of four-term Republic U.S. Rep. Jeff Denham, who had continuously ignored SIREN’s demands to support DACA and other important pro-Immigrant policies. “The people have spoken and we are excited to have new leadership in the region that will listen to the needs of our diverse, immigrant communities,” said Josefa Vega, SIREN’s Civic Engagement Associate.

SEASON OF GIVING CAMPAIGN

While many of us will be together with our loved ones rejoicing over the holidays, there are so many who find themselves separated from their families. Sadly, many are also behind bars waiting to be reunited with the people that they love. Tragically, some of these individuals are frightened children who were ripped from the arms of their parents. 
 
These are the thoughts that fill our minds at SIREN. Justice cannot wait for those who face these unfortunate circumstances. This is what drives us to work harder and do more, when we dare to think that we are at our limit.

SIREN BOLETÍN DE NOVIEMBRE 2018

Queridos amigos,

A medida que recibimos la temporada festiva, hay mucho en que reflexionar y agradecer. El 6 de noviembre de 2018 fue una elección histórica para la comunidad inmigrante y para las comunidades de color. Antes de la elección, terriblemente, las políticas de racismo, odio y miedo se estaban convirtiendo en la norma. Sin embargo, gracias a los fuertes esfuerzos de movilización en todo el país, los miembros del Congreso que representan al pueblo estadounidense son más diversos que nunca e incluyen los primeros lugares históricos para las mujeres y las comunidades Afroamericanas, Musulmanas, Latinoamericanas y Nativas Americanas, así como para la comunidad LGBTQ. ¡Esto es algo realmente maravilloso para celebrar!

Con la nueva composición del Congreso, tenemos la esperanza de que habrá un control sólido de la legislatura contra la agenda racista que está promoviendo la nueva administración. Debemos continuar trabajando juntos para presionar a los miembros del Congreso a proteger a las comunidades inmigrantes y a las comunidades de color. Continuaremos instándolos a resistir las odiosas políticas de Trump, aprobar políticas que valoren las vidas de los inmigrantes como Saludo Para Todos (Health4All) a nivel estatal, y continuaremos luchando contra La Migra (ICE) y el enredo entre las agencias de policía al nivel local en California.  ¡Y debemos continuar organizando y movilizando a los más afectados para liderar el camino para un cambio mayor en 2020!

En los meses que quedan del 2018, instamos a los miembros de la comunidad a que nos ayuden a luchar contra las regulaciones propuestas sobre la carga pública, y contra la detención de niños inmigrantes, familias y miembros de la comunidad. También estamos listos para la batalla presupuestaria que se aproxima en diciembre y solicitamos su ayuda.

¡Mientras que celebramos las fiestas con nuestra familia y amigos, nos gustaría agradecerles por su colaboración! Su apoyo ha sido vital para el progreso que hemos logrado como una  comunidad hasta ahora. ¡Estamos muy agradecidos!

SIREN MOVILIZA A MILES PARA VOTAR

Con los incesantes ataques contra inmigrantes y refugiados por parte de la administración actual, nunca antes había sido tan importante una elección intermedia. En SIREN realmente sentimos el peso de esta responsabilidad y nuestro equipo trabajó las 24 horas del día para registrar a votantes y sacar la votación el 6 de noviembre. Aquí están los resultados de nuestros esfuerzos:

-Más de 200 voluntarios bilingües en español, inglés y vietnamita reclutados, entrenados y movilizados.

-Más de 5,000 textos enviados a nuestra red de SIREN.

-Más de 15,000 nuevos jóvenes y nuevos ciudadanos estadounidenses se registraron para votar.

-Más de 130,000 llamadas telefónicas a votantes de baja propensión.

“Al celebrar estos logros, debemos de continuar construyendo sobre los logros alcanzados en todo el país para tener un liderazgo que sea más representativo de todos los estadounidenses. Esto es solo el comienzo,” dijo el Director de Participación Cívica, Jeremy Barousse. “Debemos de tratar cada elección como una oportunidad crítica para dirigir el futuro de nuestras comunidades. En SIREN, esperamos continuar trabajando con nuestros voluntarios dedicados y líderes comunitarios para impulsar una agenda pro-inmigrante."

SOY UNA SIRENISTA- TIFFANY VUONG 

Una cosa que se destacó en las recientes elecciones fue el asombroso impacto de los jóvenes votantes y activistas en todo el país. SIREN tiene el privilegio de contar con el apoyo de muchos activistas juveniles dedicados como Tiffany Vuong.

Tiffany escuchó por primera vez sobre SIREN cuando estudiaba sociología en la Universidad de California en Santa Barbara. Al mudarse al Área de la Bahía, ella vino a SIREN debido a su compromiso con la justicia social. Tiffany ha sido parte de los bancos telefónicos de SIREN, informando a las personas sobre la Proposición 10, Proposición 5 y alentando a los votantes a participar.

ORGANIZADORES DEL VALLE CENTRAL IMPULSAN EL CAMBIO
 

¡SIREN se enorgullece de haber registrado a más de 15,000 nuevos votantes en el norte de California y el Valle Central. "SIREN, a través de llamadas, tocando puertas, mensajes de texto y muchos esfuerzos de divulgación en escuelas y universidades locales en pueblos rurales de todo el Valle. Nuestro equipo electoral fue fundamental para dar voz y crear el poder de la comunidad inmigrante y refugiada en esta elección," dijo Maricela Gutiérrez, SIREN, Directora Ejecutiva.

Además de los esfuerzos de registro de votantes, el personal y los voluntarios de SIREN realizaron más de 100,000 llamadas telefónicas en condados múltiples en el Valle Central para informar a los votantes y obtener la votación.

Uno de los resultados electorales más impactante en la región fue la derrota del Representante Jeff Denham, quien continuamente ignoró las demandas de SIREN para apoyar a DACA y otras políticas pro-inmigrante. "La gente ha hablado y estamos entusiasmados de tener un nuevo liderazgo en la región, que escuchará las necesidades de nuestras diversas comunidades de inmigrantes," dijo Josefa Vega, Asociada de Participación Cívica de SIREN.

Mientras que muchos estaremos juntos con nuestras familias regocijándose por las fiestas, hay muchos que se encuentran separados de sus familias. Immigrant Rights Group to Host Press Conference Celebrating Voter Turnout Among Immigrants

San Jose, CA -- Immigrant and refugee rights organization, Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network (SIREN) will be hosting a press conference Wednesday, November 7 at 11:00am to celebrate the voter turnout among immigrants and youth in Northern California and the Central Valley, and the difference they made in the passing of key state ballot propositions and local measures.

Since September, SIREN’s civic engagement team, made up of immigrants and youth, made over 130,000 calls and 3,000 texts to immigrant voters in multiple counties throughout the Bay Area and Central Valley in Spanish and Vietnamese.

“In this election, we showed up to vote in massive numbers in our region and the state, our campaign was about engaging with immigrant and youth voters and building community power with them” said SIREN’s Executive Director, Maricela Gutiérrez.  “We will keep our movement going by organizing this new voting bloc, and continue to fight for immigrant and refugee rights.”

Speakers will include immigrants and young people who voted in their first election, and who are left out of the voting process but who helped lead the voter engagement campaign.

The fight for immigrant and refugee rights continues to intensify in every passing day of this administration. New anti-immigrant policies are being introduced that aim to close the door on immigrants from particular countries, non-white groups, and people of lower socioeconomic status.
 
With the latest public charge proposal, immigrants are not only being shamed, but could be ultimately penalized for receiving public benefits by barring them from obtaining legal status. We encourage you to stay informed by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as things are changing on a daily basis.
 
Meanwhile, there are still thousands of children in detention centers throughout the country waiting to be returned to their parents. Recent news coverage alludes to the possibility of families never being reunited, as children may be lost to adoption. Let’s not forget the permanent psychological damage being inflicted on these innocent children.
 
The cruelty and injustice that we are witnessing are unfathomable. We ask you to join us in our relentless efforts to resist and stop these atrocities.

CENTRAL VALLEY VOTER OUTREACH CAMPAIGN

There is much to be excited and hopeful about when it comes to our new generation of young voters. SIREN’s Central Valley Civic Engagement team has been visiting high schools, colleges, universities and shopping centers to register and pre-register 15,000 new voters (16 years and older) this year. Our team has been answering questions about the process of voting and encouraging young people to take a stand on issues that matter to them.
 
“The future is bright as we look to our next generation of young, progressive voters. However, we must mobilize and empower them with the knowledge and confidence to stand up and believe that their vote matters,” said Josefa Vega, SIREN’s Civic Engagement Associate.
 
If you would like to volunteer and/or support our voter registration efforts and “get the vote out” to 80,000 voters throughout Northern California and the Central Valley, please contact us at info@siren-bayarea.org. We will be walking precincts, making phone calls, and pushing hard through November 6, 2018.

SIREN is pleased to announce its new Director of Operations, Nazaneen Khalilnaji-Otto!

Nazaneen joined the team to provide administrative oversight and support to our fast-growing organization. She is excited to be a new member of the SIREN team, standing up and fighting for the rights and dignity of all people, regardless of where they were born.
 

Prior to joining SIREN, Nazaneen worked at the Partnership for Children and Youth as the Summer Matters Campaign Director, supporting the campaign’s partnerships, events, outreach and communications. Nazaneen worked in education for 20 years, from being a classroom teacher to a program director of out-of-school programs. She earned her Masters of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania, and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Evergreen State College.

“Having previously been a long time volunteer with SIREN, I am pleased to join the team as SIREN’s Central Valley Civic Engagement Associate. I was born in Stockton, California to an immigrant father from Jalisco, México. I am the youngest child in my family and the first to graduate from a university.
 
Growing up in Fresno, I witnessed the abuses sustained by my father at the hands of employers that exploited his status. Experiencing second-hand discrimination and its effects on my father’s health, I immersed myself in politics and philosophy. While in high school I became involved with social justice groups and in the community. The combination of these activities developed my passion to advocate for immigrant rights.
 
Through SIREN, I have learned that the law isn’t merely a means of criminalization or a vehicle of corruption. The law can be used as an instrument in the fight for immigrant rights and advocacy.”

La lucha por los derechos de los inmigrantes y los refugiados continúa intensificando cada día en este gobierno. Se están introduciendo nuevas políticas contra los inmigrantes que apuntan a cerrar la puerta a los inmigrantes de países particulares, grupos no blancos y personas de estatus socioeconómico bajo.

CAMPAÑA DE ALCANCE PARA VOTANTES DEL VALLE CENTRAL

Hay mucho de qué entusiasmarse y tener esperanzas cuando se trata de nuestra nueva generación de votantes jóvenes. El equipo de Participación Cívica del Valle Central de SIREN ha estado visitando escuelas secundarias, colegios, universidades y centros comerciales para registrar y pre-registrar a 15,000 nuevos votantes (16 años y más) este año. Nuestro equipo ha estado respondiendo a preguntas sobre el proceso de votación y alentando a los jóvenes a tomar una posición sobre los temas que les interesan.
 
“El futuro es brillante cuando miramos a nuestra próxima generación de votantes jóvenes y progresistas. Sin embargo, debemos movilizarlos y empoderarlos con el conocimiento y la confianza para defender y creer que su voto es importante," dijo Josefa Vega, Asociada de Participación Cívica de SIREN.

SIREN ofrece clínicas gratuitas legales semanalmente (sin cita) que incluyen, la defensa de deportación, servicios afirmativos, como asistencia de solicitud de ciudandanía y clínicas de DACA. 

SIREN ofrece clínicas legales gratuitas los miércoles para asistencia de defensa de deportación y los jueves para preguntas generales sobre inmigración en nuestra oficina de San Jose entre las 9 y las 4 p.m. (No se requiere cita.) También ofrecemos clínicas mensuales y móviles de DACA y clínicas de asistencia a la ciudadanía y clínicas de asilo mensuales gratuitas en nuestra oficina del Valle Central.
