Dream of Citizenship Becomes Reality
Altagracia Morales, a seventy-eight year old Salvadoran woman with terminal cancer had one wish: to become a U.S. Citizen. Morales had previously applied for U.S. citizenship years ago, but was denied due to her inability to speak English. On Nov. 4, 2011 Morales became a U.S. Citizen with the collaboration of Hospice of Valley, Congressman Mike Honda’s office, SIREN and USCIS office.
“Helping Mrs. Morales submit a N-400 (Naturalization Application), N-648 (Medical Certification for Disability Exception) and I-912 (Request for Fee Waiver) was one of the most rewarding cases I have ever processed. It is truly touching to see one overcome the struggles, such as financial hardships and language barriers in order to become a U.S. Citizen. It is a great feeling knowing that I have the ability to empower families by providing direct services, and being able to educate the immigrant community on the importance of becoming U.S. Citizens, becoming active voters, and being a part of political decision making.” – Maria Caballero, SIREN Immigrant Services Program Associate
